I grew up participating in a competitive sport where I traveled and won 2 National titles. I learned early how important hours of practice/training pay off. I sort of adopted an outlook of as long as I practiced correctly and hard enough I wouldn’t have to worry as much about the competition, just my own performance. The results would show.
I have Brian to thank for introducing us into the sport of triathlon. I started participating about 3 years ago after arthritis in my ankle side lined me from jogging. I took to the pool, and fell in love. That is when I started training for my first race. I came in last in my age group at my first race, but have gone on to have many podium finishes.
I am most proud of my swimming abilities, I never took any lessons and when I first started 3 years ago, I wouldn’t put goggles on and my face in the water, I am claustrophobic. I have also lost 50 lbs during these past 3 years of training and healthier living.
Having a spouse that also participates makes life a lot easier, we both see the value in training and give each other the time needed.
Triathlon has given me the confidence to push past my fears and trust my abilities as an athlete, a parent, and executive in the work place. Triathlon draws a special group of people together, and it shows at the races and during practice times together. There is a camaraderie like I have never seen.
I have absolutely loved getting back to my competitive nature in my late 40’s. We are raising our daughter in the multisport world and she is seeing the value of the friends we make and healthy lifestyle we lead.
I love the line from Apollo 13 when they fear the capsule is done for – “With all due respect, I believe this is going to be our finest hour!” I live my life and race by this thought!
